To provide safe shelter to homeless and abused women and children in crisis and to offer life changing services promoting stability, dignity and self-reliance.
The Shade Tree had little more to offer than safety, shelter, and cots in the basement of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church in 1990, when diocese members, Junior League of Las Vegas, and the City of Las Vegas collaborated to establish a permanent shelter. In December of that year, The Shade Tree opened in a building owned by Catholic Charities.
Within ten years, The Shade Tree had far outgrown this first building. Programs and services that were truly helping women attain self-reliance were taxing the old building when the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation made a dream come true with a $5 million dollar capital grant to build a new facility. This is the building The Shade Tree currently occupies at the corner of Owens and Main Street.
The Shade Tree is Southern Nevada’s only 24-hour accessible emergency shelter for women and children in crisis, servicing many who are victims of domestic violence and/or human trafficking. The Shade Tree is equipped with 364 beds and provides over 100,000 nights of shelter and over 165,000 meals every year.
On average, The Shade Tree provides assistance to 15 new families each day and last year helped 5,200 women and children by providing them with safe shelter and other life changing services. The Shade Tree facility offers residential areas with sleeping rooms, libraries, training rooms, children's playrooms, meals, and laundry services. Additionally, the organization offers programs and services for women and children including life skills, workforce readiness, health services, and housing assistance. The Shade Tree has been providing safe shelter to women and children since 1989.
The Shade Tree is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. This means that most donations are tax deductible. We are a local ‘grassroots’ agency with no national affiliation or support.
To remove any barriers that might prevent a woman from accessing necessary services for herself and her children, 100% of our services are provided completely free of charge, regardless of the length of stay.
